The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has been engaged in uranium mining in Niger since 2007, at first through their subsidiary China Nuclear International Uranium Corporation (CNIUC, also referred to as SinoU[1]), who then sold their 37.2% share in Société des Mines d’Azelik S.A. (SOMINA) to another subsidiary China Nuclear International Ltd.[2] As of March 2012 SOMINA held an operating license for the Azelik uranium ore mine, located in the Agadez region of Niger.[3] The Azelik mine produced its first batch of 'yellowcake' (sodium urinate) on 30 December 2010, making it the CNNC's first international mining production.[4]
