As of 2010, international mining companies (IMCs) were engaged in the exploration and production of minerals including uranium, gold and coal.[1] There has been long-standing foreign interest in Niger's uranium reserves, with the first uranium mine dating back to 1971.[2] IMCs are bound by the Nigerien Mining Code 2006 and often work in partnership with the government's mining assets company Société du Patrimoine des Mines du Niger (SOPAMIN), run by the Office National des Ressources Minieres du Niger (ONAREM).[2]
