Red Back Mining operates the Chirano Gold Mine located within the Bibiani Gold Belt in southwestern Ghana, approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Kumasi, Ghana's second largest city.[1] The mine is owned 90 percent by Kinross Gold Corporation since they acquired Red Back Mining in 2010, with the remaining ten percent owned by the Government of Ghana. [1]

The Chirano mine consists of several open pits and one underground operation. In 2010 Kinross Gold Corporation reported the following figures for the Chirano mine[1]:

  • 2010 gold equivalent production: 47,689 ounces.
  • 2010 cost of sales: US$605/ounces.
  • 2010 Proven and Probable Reserves: 2.4 million ounces.
